Samba — Afro-Brazilian musical rhythm and dance, performed to the rhythm. African rhythms were brought to Brazil with the slaves during the colonial period. Slaves were transported to the North-East of the country – mainly in the state of Bahia, which was the first capital of Brazil – Salvador, Bahia. Birth of Afro-Brazilian culture: music, dance, capoeira, religious tradition (the religious principle was present and is still present in many dance music genres).

Before the abolition of slavery in Brazil in 1888, any manifestations of national consciousness of Africans were suppressed, and some were outside the law.

Traditional Samba — samba de roda (Samba circle), it is called samba do Reconcavo baiano is the progenitor of all other types of Samba. It is included in the list of intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO. This dance originated in the state of Bahia, where it is still played by people of all ages. All stand in a circle – men perform music, and women in traditional full-skirted dresses and turbans singing and clapping. In the center of the dancing couple – man and woman or two women.

These «Bahia aunt», moving to larger cities, including Rio de Janeiro, kept the Afro-Brazilian culture, which even in the mid 20th century to be taken very seriously. They usually occupied responsible positions within the Afro-Brazilian religious tradition of candomblé and often at home was arranged along with religious and simple folk festivals, where people played and danced the Samba.

Eventually the Samba in the cities was ropinirolee, was starting, mixed with other rhythms and dances, and turned out what makes Brazil is known worldwide — carnival Samba – samba enredo(“scenario”).

The most famous carnival — in Rio de Janeiro, but it is actually celebrated with equal panache are held in almost all Brazilian cities, and every city has its own particular celebration. For example, in Recife, capital of Pernambuco, during the carnival you can hear a variety of local traditional rhythms that are different from Samba — frevo, afoxe, Maracatu. Carnival in Brazil — it’s a competition between the different Samba schools.

The Samba school — not just a dance school in our ordinary understanding, and very complex organization. In the first place in school musicians rather than dancers. The Samba schools have a very important social function — it is a way to take the population, especially the youth.

Annually, each school is preparing for the carnival for a very long time. To begin, select a theme – it can be any soccer, heaven or superheroes. “Carnavalesco” carefully prescribes the script. Then write down the song that will be dancing at the carnival. Excavation should be regulated the time, and it may reduce the score. Also points off for missing the rhythm of the dancers or broken decorations. Before the main procession arrange technical rehearsal – a Lite version of carnival.

The election of the king and Queen of carnival — the traditional event organized for several weeks and even months before the carnival (not to be confused with the Queen of the orchestra each Samba school). Typically, such a competition is held in each city (the most famous contests, of course, in Rio de Janeiro and são Paulo).

In each school selected rainha da bateria – “Queen of the orchestra”. The most beautiful girl that goes to the carnival procession separately (it is, however, not separated from the procession, she just moves more freely and actively interacts with the musicians of the orchestra, and often plays itself — most often on the tambourine). She is the Muse, the quintessence scenario. In recent times it has tended to invite famous Actresses for this role.

The classic and most popular costume for carnival is feathers. Perhaps because in Brazil there are a lot of different kinds of birds and parrots in particular. But feathers is not a prerequisite to suit, some use horse hair, rhinestones or even paint – body art. Generally costumes are becoming open and more honest, because in Brazil over the last few years has developed a cult of the body. More than this body, the better. Anorexic girls model type, prevailing in Europe, will not meet.

Despite the minimalist costume for carnival is very heavy due to the “backpack” feather – like wings girls, symbolizing a bird. On the head is also usually heavy headdress of feathers. These peculiarities of costume “dictate” and features a dance – moves mainly in the lower body, shoulders and head remain stationary.

There is a very heavy costumes, which is not something that dance, but also difficult to walk. The costumes are very long, are expensive, and discarded after the carnival. Some feathers and rhinestones can leave, but this is rarely done.

Samba — this is primarily music, and its species are numerous: Samba carnival, Samba-reggae (aka Samba-Ashe), Samba di gafieira (pair dance, which has very little in common with the usual ballroom Samba). By the way, that before the bankruptcy Samba, Samba it is in name only, it is rather a variation on the theme. Very often saved only rhythmic base for the competitions using the compositions of Spanish speaking performers, not actually used Samba-step — the basis of Samba, music speed 2 times lower compared to carnival Samba.

Actually, the Samba dance is no different variety of shapes. A good Samba dancer rather should reflect the mood and to master Samba step, diluting it with some other figures. What we see in staged Brazilian dance show — rather, fusion, again «a variation on the theme of Samba» to make a dance suitable for the format of the stage. If you look at the contests that take place among the dancers in Brazil, you will not see the choreography of the fireworks, the emphasis is on elegant suits with sky-high prices and on the ability of the dancer to present this suit, camberra (there is such a verb in Portuguese). Very often dancers at the carnival at the same time play musical instruments, and again at the carnival dancers do not show super-complicated choreography.
